Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has stirred reactions on social media after humorously declaring himself Ghanaian ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The award-winning singer made the remarks in his Instagram story after sharing a video snippet of President John Dramani Mahama's speech on the country’s plans for fan support at the upcoming tournament.

In the speech, President Mahama explained that the government would not be able to sponsor or transport Ghanaian football supporters to the World Cup.

According to him, the cost of facilitating such trips would place a significant burden on the state, as the World Cup is being held across three countries, making it an imprudent use of public funds.

Instead, the President noted that Ghana would rely heavily on Ghanaians living abroad to rally behind the Black Stars during the competition.

Reacting to the statement, Davido reposted the video to his Instagram Story and added a short, attention-grabbing caption: “I am Ghanaian for the World Cup.”

The playful comment quickly caught the attention of fans, who interpreted it as Davido’s way of showing support for Ghana’s national team ahead of the global football competition.

While the singer did not provide further context, his post has generated excitement among football fans, especially given the fierce but friendly rivalry between the two countries.

Davido’s declaration comes as anticipation continues to build for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana will look to make a strong impression on the world stage, with support from fans at home and across the diaspora.
