Ghanaian entrepreneur and media personality Michelle Diamond, popularly known as Shatta Michy, has spoken out against the recent xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians living in South Africa.

Michy made the remarks at the Accra International Airport while welcoming the second batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa following the attacks.

Expressing her disappointment over the situation, she described it as unfortunate that fellow Africans would subject one another to such treatment.

“It is very unfortunate that African would do that to each other. We are all brothers and sisters, and this should not be happening,” she stated.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Michy commended Ghana’s government for its swift intervention in ensuring the safe return of affected citizens.

She specifically praised Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and President John Dramani Mahama for their efforts in facilitating the evacuation process.

According to her, the government’s prompt response has made her proud to be Ghanaian.

“I, for one, am very proud to say I am a Ghanaian at this moment, so if we go to another country and we are not valued, you should know that you are very much valued at home,” she said.

Michy also urged Ghanaians to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions against South Africans living in Ghana. Rather than calling for their expulsion, she encouraged authorities to ensure that existing laws and regulations are strictly enforced.

She further advised the returnees to take advantage of any opportunities made available to them upon their return and focus on rebuilding their lives.

The comments come as Ghana continues efforts to support citizens affected by the xenophobic unrest in South Africa, with authorities coordinating the safe return and reintegration of evacuees.
