Veteran Ghanaian broadcaster and Presidential Special Envoy to the Caribbean, Kwesi Kyei Darkwah, popularly known as KKD, has recounted how businessman Sam Jonah single-handedly supported his television show during his early days at GBC.

Speaking in an interview on Power FM shared on X on June 10, 2026, KKD narrated how he launched his popular show, KKD 45, on GBC without sponsorship.

According to him, he wanted to make a mark in the media industry, which motivated him to use his personal funds to finance the programme.

“GBC had made up their minds not to give people the opportunity to create their own shows, but rather use them for existing programmes. So when I realised they were not giving me a new show, I personally went to the bank, withdrew my own money, bought airtime, and started my own show, KKD 45.

"I was there one day when Sam Jonah sent for me. When I got there, I learnt something important, that givers and helpers do not disrespect people. Such people do not waste the time of others. It’s only villagers who waste people’s valuable time by keeping them waiting,” he said.

KKD further reflected on how Sir Sam Jonah eventually decided to sponsor the programme after receiving positive feedback about it from some foreign audiences.

According to him, the businessman was impressed by the impact of the show and was surprised to learn that KKD had been funding it himself.

“He told me he had received positive feedback from some white individuals and was happy about it. That was when he asked me why I didn’t have sponsors. I told him we had no sponsorship and that I was funding the programme myself. He was surprised, but I explained that I was building a brand.

"He then called his secretary and handed over an envelope. He actually paid for my programme and even covered payments for the people I was working with,” he added.
