Media personality Kafui Dey has lifted the curtain on how 2026 TGMA Artiste of the Year Black Sherif quietly built his buzz before breaking into mainstream music.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime TV on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Kafui Dey recounted asking the award-winning musician directly how he rose to prominence.
"I asked him, 'How did you blow up?' and he said, 'WhatsApp Status,'" Kafui Dey disclosed.
According to the media personality, Black Sherif consistently uploaded his music to the platform and gradually noticed it travelling beyond his immediate circle.
After the TGMA high, what's next for Black Sherif?
The moment it clicked, Kafui Dey recalled, was when strangers in his hometown began to take notice.
"He knew the thing was going far when he walked through Konongo and people he didn't know kept saying, 'good music'," he said.
Kafui Dey used the revelation to make a point about the power of social media, describing it as a personal television station that puts creatives in direct contact with their audience.
But beyond the marketing insight, Kafui Dey also had words for Black Sherif the person, describing him as a young man whose maturity far exceeds his years.
"Blacko is a soft guy but very focused. He sounds older than he is. He sounds like a 40-year-old, and he's just in his early 20s,” he said.
