DopeNation breaks down viral 'Kakalika' song

Ghanaian music duo DopeNation has shared the inspiration behind their global hit Kakalika.

They have explained how the song’s unique sound and message have helped it grow from a Ghanaian street anthem into an international dance sensation.

Speaking during an interview on BBC Radio 1Xtra, the twins described Kakalika as a “powerful message with a dance rhythm” that carries the spirit of Ghana while embracing sounds from different parts of the world.

According to them, the song is more than just music; it is a dance instruction that encourages people to let loose and enjoy themselves.

“Hurry up, break your body. Come on, man, break your body. How are you gonna break your body? It’s Kakalika,” they said while explaining the energy behind the record.

DopeNation also highlighted the musical influences that shaped the song, revealing that listeners can hear traces of Ghana’s famous azonto movement alongside other modern genres.

“You can hear a bit of Azonto, hear a bit of the old-school sounds in there. All the elements of Ghana are in there, all the elements of other forms of music. Electronic music, Azonto, Amapiano, that bass line, and there is a little bit of hip-hop as well,” they explained.

The duo further spoke about their decision to sing in different Ghanaian languages, stating that representing Ghana means embracing the country’s cultural diversity.

Explaining the meaning behind the title Kakalika, DopeNation disclosed that the word means “cockroach” in the Ghanaian language and symbolises something that can be found everywhere.

“Kakalika is a Ghanaian word for cockroach. The reason why we are singing for the cockroach is that the cockroach is everywhere. You see roaches everywhere. That is why now the song is everywhere,” they said.

Their explanation comes as Kakalika continues to enjoy massive international recognition, especially through viral dance trends and football celebrations across different parts of the world.
