Sarkodie is a Ghanaian rap sensation
Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has paid glowing tribute to former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, describing him as one of Ghana’s greatest ambassadors and a true representation of the country’s spirit.
Speaking during an interview with ESPN, Sarkodie reflected on Gyan’s impact on Ghana both on and off the pitch, emphasising how the football icon embodies the everyday resilience and character of Ghanaians.
Watching a video of the Black Stars players that included Gyan, singing and jubilating in what appeared to be a bus, the award-winning musician said it reminded him of home.
“The best depiction of my country, Ghana. I just saw Ghana. You know, this is our everyday life. And of course, my brother represents the true Ghanaian spirit. This is what happens even back in school. This is us,” he said

The rapper also acknowledged the immense pressure Gyan carried throughout his football career, particularly during defining moments for the national team.
He referenced the former striker’s famous penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but stressed that it should not overshadow the immense contributions he has made to the country.
“He has done a lot for us. I think I have a line in one of my songs, Illuminati, and I mentioned that Asamoah Gyan made one mistake, and the whole of Ghana, you know, I could understand because he was holding our destiny at that very moment,” he stated.
Sarkodie further highlighted Gyan’s international influence, noting that the football legend remains one of the first names many people associate with Ghana around the world.
“Most airports that I get to, and I say I’m from Ghana, they’re like, ‘Oh, Asamoah Gyan. They got me a direct link just because of him. He has done a lot. He’s our star,” Sarkodie revealed
The rapper concluded by describing Gyan as an enduring icon whose achievements have elevated Ghana’s image globally.
“He’s helped Ghanaians as a whole. As far as representation out there internationally, I think he did amazing. He’s still an icon for us, at least a reference point as far as Ghana is concerned,” Sarkodie added.
