Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has addressed the long-held perception that his music is too intellectual for casual listening, stating that while his work has depth and substance, it was never designed to feel like a lecture.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 on the Afternoon Show, the popular rapper noted that the characterisation, though well-intentioned, misrepresents what he actually does.

"I think some of it is meant to be flattery, but I think it's a misconception. I don't make academic music," he said.

'I am not a very religious person' - M.anifest

Describing his work as layered and explorative, M.anifest stated that his goal is to go beyond the typical pop music on the airwaves but not to intimidate anyone with his lyrics.

"I make dope music that has layers to it, that has substance, that is unafraid to dig deeper, that is unafraid to explore beyond 'whine your waist.'

"But we shouldn't equate it to a song that you need a pen and paper to listen to," he said.

M.anifest said he is actively working to shift how people approach his music and pointed to the energy at his live shows as evidence that his audience often surprises itself.

"I think some people sometimes will be surprised when they come to a show of mine and they are jamming like nobody's business. I think they thought they would come and be there and be like, 'Okay, please, lecture me.' What we do is substantive," he said.
