JA Adofo says he feared losing his son to the dangers of the music industry
Ghanaian highlife legend Obuoba JA Adofo has disclosed that he initially opposed his son, Rubean Adofo, popularly known as Adofo Jnr, from pursuing music as a full-time career because of the dangers he believed existed in the industry.
Speaking in an interview with Nayas, the veteran musician said he had hoped his son would build a career outside music and even enrolled him in a computer school to study computer engineering.
However, Adofo Jnr was determined to follow in his father's footsteps.
JA Adofo explained that his decision was influenced by his own experiences during the peak of his music career, when he believed the industry was plagued by spiritual attacks and jealousy.
“I enrolled him in a computer school, but he refused to continue. He insisted that he wanted to follow in my footsteps and become a musician. I told him I couldn’t allow it because, during my prime, there was a lot of juju in the music industry. If you weren’t careful, someone could destroy your life,” he said.

The highlife icon further described music as a risky profession in Ghana, recalling that several musicians died under circumstances he did not believe were natural. According to him, some were allegedly victims of jealousy within the industry.
Despite his initial opposition, JA Adofo said he eventually accepted his son's decision after realising how instrumental he had become to the survival of the family's band.
The legendary musician revealed that there was a time when all members of the City Boys Band had all left, a situation that could have led to the collapse of the group. However, he credited Adofo Jnr with keeping the band alive, describing him as a blessing.
Today, Obuoba JA Adofo has officially handed over leadership of the City Boys Band International to his son, who now leads the celebrated highlife group.
The City Boys Band International is a household name in Ghana and has built a strong reputation across Africa for its captivating live performances.
Over the years, the band has received several honours, including Lifetime Achievement Awards at both the 2019 3Music Awards and the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).
Under Adofo Jnr's leadership, the band has continued to perform on major platforms across Ghana, including Independence Day celebrations and regional durbars.
The group has also entertained audiences at music festivals in several African countries, including Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, and Nigeria, continuing the legacy established by its founder.
