Korle Bu calls on Mzbel to provide details after relative allegedly died over 'no bed'

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has called on musician Mzbel to furnish it with information that will aid its investigation into claims that her relative died after being denied a hospital bed at the facility.

In a statement issued on July 7, 2026, the hospital's management said it became aware of a video published by Mzbel on social media suggesting that her relative passed away as a result of the unavailability of a bed at the hospital.

The hospital said it is specifically seeking to determine whether the deceased was referred to Korle Bu and denied admission upon arrival, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred to the facility and had instead been advised to await the availability of a bed.

"Since becoming aware of the publication, every effort has been made to establish contact with Mzbel and her family to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

"In particular, the Hospital seeks to determine whether the deceased was referred to KBTH and denied admission upon arrival, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred to the Hospital and was advised to await the availability of a bed," management said in the statement.

Korle Bu also took the opportunity to reaffirm its obligations under the government's no-refusal policy for emergency cases, noting that the directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address remains firmly in force.

"The Hospital would therefore regard any deliberate refusal to attend to an emergency patient as a serious breach of established policy and would investigate such conduct thoroughly," the statement read.

Management added that the hospital had since acquired additional beds and other facilities to ease the incidence of bed unavailability and had consistently reminded all clinical and emergency departments of their obligation to provide emergency care in line with national policy.

Korle Bu extended its condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public of its commitment to establishing the facts surrounding the incident "in a fair, transparent and professional manner."
