Sonnie Badu fires Black Stars over lost passion, unity and commitment
Gospel musician and pastor Sonnie Badu has renewed his call for accountability within the Black Stars following what he describes as a decline in commitment and discipline among some members of the national team.
The musician, who has in recent weeks expressed concerns about the state of the team after Ghana’s disappointing showing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, believes the current generation of players lacks the hunger, unity and national pride that characterised previous Black Stars squads.
According to Sonnie Badu, the attitude of some young players has changed, with some appearing to place more emphasis on personal lifestyles, social media presence and material possessions rather than focusing fully on their responsibilities on the pitch.
In a post shared on his Instagram page, the gospel musician looked back on the era when the Black Stars had a strong connection between local players and the Ghanaian supporters, describing that period as one marked by passion, sacrifice and commitment.
“In the past, the Blackstars team was predominantly made up of local players, with only a few playing abroad. The team’s unity and commitment were palpable, and when the national anthem played, everyone sang with passion, some even shedding tears.

“Abedi Pele was the star player, striking fear into the hearts of opponents with his exceptional skills. The local players fought hard, knowing they’d face trouble back home if they didn’t perform well.
“Nowadays, it’s a different story, with some young players seeming careless and more interested in shopping and social media than the game,” he wrote.
The musician also praised members of the Black Stars technical team who have contributed to improving Ghana’s goalkeeping department, particularly goalkeeper trainer Fatawu Dauda, for his role in developing the country’s shot-stoppers.
“While we’re experiencing a mix of emotions, I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the goalkeepers’ coach, @a_fatawu_dauda16, and his boss. It’s clear that you both played a significant role in making Ghana’s goalkeepers a topic of global discussion. I commend you for your hard work,” he further noted.
