'Don't marry a woman simply because she is a virgin' – Chiwetalu Agu advises singles

Veteran Nollywood actor Chief Chiwetalu Agu has advised single men and women against choosing a spouse based solely on virginity, wealth, physical appearance, or other superficial qualities.

Speaking in a video shared on social media on July 12, 2026, the actor stressed that good character should be the most important consideration when selecting a life partner.

According to him, virginity is a symbol of purity but should not be mistaken for loyalty, emotional maturity, or the qualities required to sustain a successful marriage.

"Keeping your virginity or being a virgin doesn't automatically make you wife material. Don't marry a woman simply because she is a virgin. Virginity signifies purity, not loyalty, good character, emotional intelligence, or emotional maturity," he said.

Chiwetalu Agu noted that the same principle applies to men, urging women not to choose a husband simply because he is a virgin, handsome, wealthy, or successful.

"The same thing applies to men. Don't marry a man simply because he is a virgin, handsome, wealthy, or successful," he stated.

He encouraged prospective couples to take time to assess each other's character before making a lifelong commitment.

"For the sake of your life, peace, happiness and sanity, choose someone whose character has been tested and proven. Ask questions. Marry someone who genuinely connects with you, someone who is kind, respectful, loving, emotionally mature and committed to building a healthy relationship," he advised.

The actor further stated that finding a partner with strong values and a reverence for God is a blessing.

"If you find a partner who has all the good qualities and, most importantly, is God-fearing, then you're very fortunate. Character is the foundation of a lasting marriage. Everything else is secondary," he added.
