'I refused to take it' – Bukom Banku on rejecting GH¢200,000 and iPhone left by stranger

Veteran Ghanaian boxer cum musician, Bukom Banku, has recounted how he turned down an offer to keep GH¢200,000 and an iPhone that a taxi driver allegedly wanted him to safeguard for its owner.

Speaking in a video shared on social media, the outspoken boxer narrated that the incident happened while he was bathing at his home in Bukom when a visitor arrived looking for him.

According to Bukom Banku, a woman in his house informed the visitor that he was bathing, but the man insisted on waiting until he was done.

After meeting the visitor, Bukom Banku said the man introduced himself as a taxi driver from Abeka Lapaz and claimed a female passenger had forgotten GH¢200,000 and an iPhone in his taxi after a trip to Legon.

“He told me he was from Abeka Lapaz and that a lady forgot two billion old cedis and an iPhone in his taxi. He came to Bukom to give me the money so that if I heard on the radio that someone had lost it, I could return it,” he said.

The former boxer said he was surprised the driver had chosen him instead of other well-known personalities and advised him to hand the items over to the police.

“I asked him, ‘You left Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy and came to me?’ I told him that if he believed I was more trustworthy than them, then he should rather take the money to the police station.”

However, Bukom Banku claimed the driver refused, saying he feared the police would keep the money for themselves. The boxer said he immediately rejected the request because he feared the consequences of being found in possession of the unknown phone and cash.

“I told him if I collected the money and the iPhone, they could track the phone to my house. What if it was linked to a crime? I could end up in jail. That’s why I refused it.”

Bukom Banku used the opportunity to caution young people against accepting money or valuables from strangers out of greed, warning that doing so could land them in serious legal trouble if the items were connected to criminal activity.

He urged Ghanaians to be vigilant and avoid putting themselves in situations that could lead to unnecessary problems with law enforcement.
