'It's not cheap at all' - Stonebwoy on financial struggles behind his concerts

Afro-dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has revealed that he largely finances BHIMFest from his own earnings, saying the annual concert has become increasingly difficult to organise due to dwindling corporate sponsorship.

Speaking in an interview with Black Rasta on 3FM ahead of his BHIMFest UK concert in August 2026, the award-winning musician said hosting concerts of an international standard is far from cheap, especially without strong financial backing.

"It's not cheap at all for an artiste like myself without any support," he said.

Stonebwoy explained that one of the biggest setbacks for artistes has been the loss of sponsorship opportunities from alcoholic beverage companies and betting brands, following regulatory restrictions on celebrity endorsements.

"Most of the avenues, especially the alcoholic beverage sponsorships that we used to partner with, have been shut down by some authorities. Those are the areas that were able to support these shows because of how marketable those products are," he stated.

According to him, the lack of sponsorship has made it difficult to raise funds for large-scale productions, forcing him to rely on determination and personal investment to keep BHIMFest alive.

"It's very difficult to actually raise finances to do such calibre of shows. Passion leads it all, and we are able to scrape the ground and put one or two things together to continue to showcase Ghana in that light."

The "Jejereje" hitmaker noted that despite the financial challenges, he has consistently brought top international acts to the festival, citing Davido and Jamaican dancehall star Spice among previous performers.

When asked whether he uses money earned from his international performances to finance BHIMFest, Stonebwoy answered in the affirmative.

"Absolutely. That's just how you reinvest in yourself. I think 80 or 90 percent of the time, that's how I actually do it," he said.
