Lil Wayne reveals how he recorded music while in prison

Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne recently revealed how he recorded music while he was locked up in Rikers Island in New York in 2010.

Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., served eight months in Rikers Island on weapon possession charges. Despite being locked up and lacking the necessary tools to make music, the 43-year-old said that he still managed to record music.

“I went to the studio every night in jail,” the Lollipop rapper said during an appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast on Tuesday, PEOPLE reported. Lil Wayne revealed that he used the phone to record.

“In my cell,” he stated. “That meant everybody be quiet. I’m about to beat on this damn table.”

The 43-year-old said that though his bedtime was 10:45 p.m., he managed to remain awake beyond that time by initiating his phone calls to enable him to record.

“I would do it on purpose … That’s why everyone’s gotta lock in,” Lil Wayne said in reference to his fellow inmates. “It was just me on the phone and [that way] I can actually record.”

Lil Wayne was asked if anyone tried to hear what he was up to. He said the majority of the people were not interested in what he was doing on the phone.

He also said that his stint at Rikers Island wasn’t that bad when he was asked if that was “the worst year” of his life while locked up, PEOPLE reported.

“Not at all,” he said. “But I have to give all of that thanks and credit to the people that were around me in there. They made it their job to make it easy for me.”

Lil Wayne said that though he initially attempted to shorten his days, he ultimately joined everyone to watch TV. Asked about the show that he preferred to watch during that period, the 43-year-old revealed it was Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid.

“You think they’re watching it because a female is in there naked. Nah, they know the storyline, they know everything,” he explained.
