Ras Kuuku recounts sabotaging family business to escape selling 'ice water'

Ghanaian reggae musician Ras Kuuku has opened up about the difficult circumstances he endured while growing up, revealing that he deliberately damaged his guardian’s refrigerator on several occasions to avoid selling sachet water.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on OKAY FM, the musician reflected on his childhood struggles and the lengths he went to in an attempt to escape the demanding work he was assigned after school.

According to Ras Kuuku, he was responsible for selling sachet water after classes but eventually became exhausted by the routine.

“I have suffered a lot in life. Whenever I returned from school, I was made to sell ice water, and I would kick and stamp on the fridge so it would spoil. They would take it for repairs, and that gave me about two weeks to rest. When it came back, I would sell for about a week before damaging it again,” he said

He explained that after the refrigerator developed repeated faults, his guardian decided to abandon the sachet water business and instead asked him to start selling slippers.

However, Ras Kuuku said he was equally determined not to take on the new responsibility. He claimed he pretended to be ill and asked to be taken to the Achimota Hospital.

According to him, while his guardian briefly stepped away to use the washroom, he secretly approached the doctor and confessed that he was not actually sick.

“I told the doctor I had suffered for too long and begged him to write a report stating that I should never carry anything on my head again,” he recounted, adding that the doctor granted his request. The medical note, he said, excused him from carrying goods for sale thereafter.

The reggae artiste also recalled frequently pounding fufu during his younger years. He said that came to an end after he dislocated his shoulder in a school incident.

Despite recounting the hardships he experienced, Ras Kuuku praised the woman who raised him, acknowledging the sacrifices she made for him and the other children under her care.

According to him, although life was difficult, she ensured they received a good education and did everything within her means to provide for them.
