My husband and I have been together for 47 years – Amy Newman

Amy Newman believes her nearly five-decade of marriage is proof that the institution is a lifelong journey, not a destination.

In an interview on Sompa FM, the gospel musician disclosed that she got married in 1979 and has now been with her husband for 47 years, with their marriage still going strong.

Speaking about how they have managed to sustain their marriage for so long, she explained that she is someone who does not keep issues bothering her to herself.

She also credited her humble upbringing as one of the key reasons their marriage has endured.

According to her, she comes from a humble background, which she described as "low-class," while her husband's family were aristocrats and considered "high-class."

She said she entered the marriage with humility and respect, despite the difference in their backgrounds.

“My husband and I have been together for 47 years. We got married in 1979. I’m someone who doesn’t keep things to myself, and I’ve always remembered where I came from.

“I come from a very humble background, while my husband’s family were aristocrats and considered high class. I came from what many would call a low-class family, so I entered the marriage with humility and respect,” she stated.

Amy Newman further recalled that when she moved into her in-laws' home, not everyone welcomed her because of her background.

She explained that her educational level was very low, while her husband was a university graduate.

Despite the challenges and criticism she faced, she remained humble, a quality she believes helped her gain acceptance and preserve her marriage.

The gospel musician also disclosed that she stepped away from the music scene for about 14 years after she stopped receiving spiritual inspiration through the songs she believed came from the Holy Spirit.

“From 2007, I don’t know what happened, but I stopped hearing anything. Before then, I could hear the Holy Spirit singing for me or singing to me. But from that time, I didn’t hear any song. I remained like that until 2018, when I finally released another song. So, I stopped for 14 years,” she said.
