'Marry one woman and stick to her' - Timothy Bentum on Kantanka family feud

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker, Timothy Bentum has cautioned young people against polygamy amid ongoing tension within the family of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Patience Adu on the second day of the funeral ceremony of the late religious leader and industrialist in Accra, Bentum reflected on the key lessons society must draw from family disputes.

Addressing the issue, Bentum advocated for monogamy, arguing that sticking to one partner eliminates many avoidable life complications.

"Lessons must be learnt and chief amongst those is that we should love peace and marry one woman and stick to one woman. It will solve a lot of problems in life," he declared.

Elaborating from a Christian perspective, the actor clarified that while polygamous relationships feature in biblical history, they do not serve as a moral mandate for believers.

"I am a Christian and polygamy is not biblical; it is nowhere endorsed anywhere in the Bible. The fact that it is in the Bible does not mean it is endorsed. For example, David killed another man and married his wife in the Bible does not mean that we should also do same," Bentum explained.

He added: "What is in the Bible is not always a prescription, sometimes it is descriptive. It just describes what is happening. It doesn’t prescribe how we should live."

Acknowledging that conflicts naturally arise due to differing upbringings and human nature, the producer stressed that pursuing peace should not come at the expense of fairness and standing up for what is right.

"Some things are inevitable. Human nature, upbringings differ and people behave in different ways, so peace would be elusive sometimes.

"But looking at the big picture, you've got to put your foot down when things are not going as they should go. Yes, we want peace. But we don't want peace in the absence of justice," he said.

His comments follow recent public friction and controversy between former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo and her brother, Kwadwo Safo Jnr, over arrangements for their late father's final rites.

The final funeral rites for Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka brought together dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers across the country to pay their last respects to the industrialist and founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
