'I have been to 12 different hospitals for a cure' - YOLO's Drogba opens up

Actor John Peasah, best known for playing Drogba in the popular television series YOLO, has opened up about his prolonged health battle, revealing that he has sought treatment at about 12 different hospitals but is yet to experience the recovery he hopes for.

Speaking in an interview on Onua Showtime, the actor, who is battling a rare neurological disorder known as Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), shared what he believes may have triggered his condition.

According to John Peasah, the symptoms began after an incident at home while he was carrying an item. Although he believes that moment caused his condition, doctors have diagnosed him with Stiff Person Syndrome, the same rare neurological disorder that affected international singer Celine Dion.

“I was carrying something in my house when I suddenly heard a sound in my back. I believe that incident is what caused my condition, but the doctors say otherwise. They have diagnosed it as Stiff Person Syndrome, the same condition Celine Dion battled for some time, which kept her away from the public eye,” he said.

The actor explained that despite seeking treatment at numerous health facilities, each visit has involved fresh tests, diagnoses and new medications, yet his condition has not improved significantly.

“I have visited about 12 hospitals for a cure, and each time, they conduct tests and run diagnoses. They prescribe so many medications that after taking all of them, I feel full. So when food is served, I am unable to eat because I already feel satisfied,” he said.

John Peasah also revealed the devastating impact the illness has had on his daily life. He said he has spent the past six years largely confined to his home, not by choice, but because of the constant pain and physical limitations caused by the condition.

Despite the challenges, he said his greatest wish is to regain his health and return to living a normal life.

The actor is currently seeking financial support to undergo specialised medical treatment abroad.

According to him, he requires approximately $88,000 to cover the cost of a three-month treatment programme outside Ghana, as the specialised care needed for his condition is not readily available in the country.
