'Those constantly criticising MUSIGA have ended their careers' – A-Plus

Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has asserted that musicians who constantly criticise the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) are mostly artistes whose careers have ended.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, A-Plus questioned whether anyone had seen an active and current musician consistently criticising MUSIGA, arguing that such criticism mainly comes from musicians who are no longer active in the industry.

“If you see someone seriously and consistently criticising MUSIGA, that musician’s career is over. Show me one active artiste who is championing MUSIGA’s issues. It is not limited to only MUSIGA, GHAMRO is also part,” he said.

The MP noted that the issue is not limited to MUSIGA, but also extends to the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO), which is responsible for managing and distributing royalties to music rights holders.

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is an umbrella organisation that brings together and protects the professional interests of musicians, sound engineers, music teachers and other industry stakeholders across various genres in Ghana.

Formed in 1957 and officially incorporated in December 1975, MUSIGA is currently led by veteran musician Bessa Simons.

Over the years, the union has played a role in shaping Ghana’s music industry, including contributing to discussions around the country’s copyright framework and advocating for the rights and welfare of musicians.

It also provides support to members in areas such as copyright registration, music contracts and royalty-related matters.

MUSIGA also offers welfare support, including emergency medical assistance and bereavement aid, as well as support for aging and vulnerable musicians.

The union operates regional offices across all 16 regions of Ghana as part of efforts to decentralise support and make its services more accessible to musicians across the country.

In 2025, MUSIGA celebrated its Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years since its formal incorporation and its continued efforts to champion the rights, welfare and artistic development of Ghanaian musicians.
