Celebrated Ghanaian gospel singer Ohemaa Mercy has shared her views on the ban on corporal punishment in schools across the country.

Speaking in an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime, which was captured online on August 19, 2026, Ohemaa Mercy disagreed with the ban on caning students.

According to her, the government should consider reintroducing caning, arguing that the absence of corporal punishment has contributed to growing indiscipline among students.

Drawing from her experience as a teacher, the gospel musician noted that many students were motivated to pay attention and study hard because they wanted to avoid punishment.

“For me, it is a big problem because students become attentive when they know there is a cane. When there is no cane, it means there is no discipline.

“Stopping caning in schools, for me, was not the best decision. It should be reintroduced. Some of us had to force ourselves to learn English because we knew our English teacher would cane us if we failed to get the right words,” she said.

Further reflecting on her days as a teacher, Ohemaa Mercy stated that one thing many of her former students are unlikely to forget is the way she disciplined them.

According to her, some students were very stubborn, and she believed caning was an effective way of correcting their behaviour.

“The one thing they will remember me for is that I used to cane them a lot. I was really caning because the children were very stubborn,” she added.
