'If I hadn't switched to gospel, I wouldn't be alive today' – Ofori Amponsah

Ghanaian highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has opened up about the personal struggles that influenced his decision to temporarily switch from highlife music to gospel.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Atuu on August 22, 2026, the musician stated that his relationship with God remains an important part of his life, even though he does not necessarily attend church regularly.

“I do pray a lot. Christianity is a relationship with God but not necessarily me going to church. With me, the connection with God is still there,” he said.

Ofori Amponsah explained that he believes maintaining a close relationship with God is more important than simply attending church.

“The way things are among us humans, being close to God is far better and it’s the most important thing that I think we should do,” he shared.

Reflecting on his career, the musician admitted that he has made mistakes and disappointed people at different points in his life.

“I’m human and I will definitely make mistakes, which I know I’ve disappointed people on several occasions,” he stated.

According to Ofori Amponsah, one of the decisions that disappointed some of his fans was his move from highlife to gospel music.

“One of the disappointments was when I decided to switch from highlife to gospel and people didn’t really understand why,” he explained.

The musician, who was at the peak of his highlife career at the time, said the pressures that come with fame can have a significant impact on artistes if they are not careful.

“Musicians go through a lot and if you don’t take care, you wouldn’t know what to do with your life because of the pressure of fame,” he said.

Ofori Amponsah mentioned that the personal challenges he was experiencing at the time forced him to seek God more closely.

“That time, the things that were happening to me, I had to get closer to God more. If I didn’t take that decision then, I wouldn’t have been alive by now,” he revealed.

He therefore appealed to those who felt disappointed by his decision to leave highlife for gospel to forgive him, explaining that there were personal reasons behind the move that he was unable to disclose at the time.

“They should forgive me, but it’s not everything that I could explain,” he noted.

The ‘Otoolege’ hitmaker disclosed that he intends to document his experiences in a book someday, which he believes will help people understand the reasons behind some of the decisions he made during that period.

“One day, I will write everything in a book so that people will understand. Every decision I took back then had a meaning, so you all should forgive me,” he added.
