My 'GenZ' song is a deep and serious prayer’ - Fameye

Ghanaian musician Fameye has revealed that his viral song GenZ is not just a reflection of life’s struggles but a personal prayer and conversation with God.

Speaking in an interview with Kwadwo Sheldon, Fameye explained that the track captures his relationship with God, his imperfections, and his plea for guidance despite his stubborn nature.

“It’s a prayer; it’s a very deep and serious prayer. In the song I said I went to bed last night and I had a conversation with God and he almost gave up on me because I am stubborn,” he said.

Fameye, who disclosed that his upbringing shaped his understanding of faith, said he was inspired by the belief that God’s answers to prayers may come in different forms, including a “no”.

“My Sunday school teacher taught me that sometimes God answers yes when I pray, sometimes God answers no when I pray, just because he loves me,” he explained.

The singer said one of the key messages of the song is about trusting God’s timing, noting that people often fail to understand why some prayers are not immediately answered.

“Sometimes God will say no to my prayer, but when he says no, I will not understand him. Instead of me calming down and waiting on him, I am in a haste,” Fameye added.

He used an example of receiving blessings before being prepared for them, explaining that timing is important.

“If you don’t have money to maintain yourself and God gives you a Lamborghini, it’s a problem for you because you’re not ready for it. So when he gives you a Honda, you accept it, do you understand?” he said.

Fameye further explained that the song also reflects his struggles with staying on the right path, admitting that despite seeking God’s help, he sometimes falls short.

He added that his references to smoking, nightlife, and other realities in the song were deliberate, as he wanted to highlight issues people experience in everyday life.

“People are even saying,' Why did you talk about smoking? ' but that’s the reality. People are smoking; if I don’t say it, who will? Who will address these issues?” he asked.
