Slim Buster on how the success of ‘Masan Aba’ music video led to his friendship with Daddy Lumba
Ghanaian musician Slim Buster has recounted how the success of his hit song, Masan Aba, helped him strike a friendship with the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba.
Speaking in an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime on September 9, 2026, Slim Buster said he was surrounded by some of Ghana’s biggest music stars when he was preparing to release the song.
According to him, Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede and Rex Omar were all making waves at the time, forcing him to think differently about how to stand out.
“When I was about to release Masan Aba, Lumba was really making hit after hit. Kojo Antwi was there, Amakye Dede was also there and Rex Omar. All of them can sing very well, so I realized that I had to go behind them,” he said.
Slim Buster explained that he studied the artistes and noticed that their music videos focused mainly on the songs, with little or no dancing and choreography.
“What was the secret? I realised when they shoot videos, they don’t dance. They don’t do any choreography. They just depend on the music,” he stated.
Determined to do something different, Slim Buster disclosed that he decided to make the visuals for Masan Aba more dramatic.

He recalled initially facing challenges after being told that some of his ideas, including using fire in the video, could not be executed.
“I met a guy through, I think, Tic Tac and I told him I wanted to shoot a video. I said I needed some fire and certain things behind me, and I was told we can’t do it because we can’t point the lens towards the fire,” he recounted.
He mentioned that he later met another person who was willing to try his ideas, and the result exceeded his expectations.
“Until I met someone else and he said we could do it. He said we should give it a try. Two weeks after I shot the Masan Aba video, it was everywhere,” he shared.
According to the musician, the video became so popular that Daddy Lumba visited his office to find out who had shot it.
“That was the reason why Lumba came to my office. He asked me who shot the video, and I asked why. He then said the video is serious and he would need the person who shot it,” he stated.
Slim Buster explained that he introduced the videographer to Daddy Lumba, who also expressed interest in working with some of his dancers.
“He said he would want me to introduce the person to him, which I did, and he said he would need some of my dancers. I gave him some of them and that’s how we became friends. We became friends through Masan Aba,” he added.
