‘Don’t let this boy’s dreams end up like mine’ - Yaw Dabo appeals over Achimota SHS placement

Ghanaian actor Yaw Dabo has appealed to authorities to allow the student whose placement was changed from Achimota Senior High School to Swedru SHS to return to his first-choice school, saying the situation reminds him of his own painful experience.

In a video shared on his TikTok page, Dabo disclosed that he also missed out on attending his preferred senior high school after his placement was changed despite his academic performance, urging Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to intervene.

“What you did to me, and as a result I wasn’t able to go to school, that is exactly what you’re doing to this boy who got Achimota, and you’re taking him somewhere else. His father said it is not because the school is not good, but his son’s dream is that he wants to take Achimota to the quiz so he can get a scholarship abroad,” he said.

According to the actor, he obtained aggregate 31 at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and had selected Prempeh College, Achimota School and Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Koforidua, as his preferred schools, but his placement was later changed.

“That’s the same thing they did to me. When I completed JHS, I got 31; the schools I chose were Prempe, Achimota and Koforidua Presec. Even though I was so smart in school, I wasn’t given that opportunity, and they changed my school. Please don’t let this boy end up like me,” he stated.

Dabo noted that although he eventually found success through acting and football, he believes the student’s dream should not be cut short because of a school placement change.

“Luckily, I was able to divert into acting and football, and I am benefiting, thanks to God, but I am pleading with you: help this boy and let him go to Achimota. Honorable Haruna, I know you’re good; you’re my father, you listen to people, please let the boy go to Achimota. Don’t let his dreams end up like mine,” he pleaded.

The actor’s comments come after reports that a student who reportedly obtained aggregate 7 and was initially placed at Achimota School had his placement changed to Swedru SHS, sparking public debate on the school placement system.
