Popular comedian DKB has defended the decision by government to rename the Kotoka International Airport to the Accra International Airport, arguing it reflects the community's ownership of the land on which the airport sits.
Addressing critics of the renaming in a social media post, he pointed to the Ga community's historical role as custodians of the land.
"We were renaming the airport to [reflect] our tribe. Some people had a problem with it. How? When the airport is on our land, we have received you to stay on our land, we have been responsible, welcoming. But then, when things are going to go well for other people, you have to do more," he said.
DKB described the backlash to the renaming as part of a wider pattern of hostility directed at the Ga-Dangme community, urging critics to stop what he called "antagonization."
"There is enough hatred of Ga-Dangme people, enough antagonization," he said.
The renaming, which took effect on February 23, 2026, reversed the airport's name from Kotoka International Airport — named after Lt Gen Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in the 1966 coup that overthrew Dr Kwame Nkrumah — back to its earlier title, Accra International Airport.
Government officials, including Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, said the move was intended to honour the Ga people as the original custodians of the land on which the facility was built.
The decision sparked significant public debate, drawing support from some civil society groups while facing opposition from the Kotoka family and some traditional leaders, with one citizen even filing a Supreme Court challenge against the renaming, arguing it was unconstitutional.
