Veteran broadcaster and actor Kwame Dzokoto has disclosed that he wanted to become the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency but was overlooked by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with the position given to someone else.

According to Kwame Dzokoto, who previously contested the parliamentary seat for the constituency but lost, his interest in the DCE position was not driven by the accolades, privileges or benefits associated with the office.

Speaking to media personality Blakk Rasta, he explained that he believes more than 85% of politicians who are elected into office abandon the people after assuming power.

He said his desire was to change that narrative by getting an opportunity to serve the people directly and demonstrate that politicians can remain committed to the development of their communities after being elected or appointed.

“I wanted to be a District Chief Executive for my area, and there is a reason for that. You know, I went for the parliamentary seat for the area, but it was not the accolades, the bourgeoisie or all the goodies surrounding the post or the seat that I was interested in.

“But I have realised that in this country, let’s say if politicians are 100, when it comes to commitment to getting what is supposed to be done in our areas, more than 85% are not ready. So, I wanted to change the narrative that when politicians are voted into power, they abandon the people and go to do their own thing,” he stated.

'When I fell ill, Lordina pressured Ibrahim Mahama to fly me abroad' – Dzokoto recounts

Kwame Dzokoto, who ventured into frontline politics ahead of the 2016 general elections, explained that although he lost the parliamentary election, he still wanted an opportunity to prove himself through public service.

He said becoming DCE would have allowed him to demonstrate to the people of his area what he could achieve if entrusted with a position of responsibility.

“When I lost that seat, I wanted an opportunity where people would see that when they gave him that seat, ‘See what he has pushed for,’ so that they would realise that we are not all the same. We need to give it a double eye when we are assessing each and everyone’s capabilities. That was the reason why I was chasing the DCE position for my area, but unfortunately, I didn’t get it,” he explained.

Kwame Dzokoto also disclosed that he played a role in the formulation of the NDC’s Tourism, Arts and Culture manifesto and actively supported the party during the election period.

He said he went through the required interview process for the DCE position and believed he had the necessary academic qualifications and experience to be considered for the appointment.

According to him, his contributions to the party included serving on the committee that worked on the Tourism, Arts and Culture manifesto, as well as featuring in commercials and supporting the NDC parliamentary candidate in Tarkwa during the elections.

“We went through interviews. If it is academic qualifications, I don’t think there was a problem. If it is about service, I was part of the committee members who wrote the Tourism, Arts and Culture manifesto for the NDC. Apart from that, during the elections, I did commercials. In my small ways, I helped the candidate in Tarkwa,” he said.

He further suggested that one of the challenges he faced was the absence of a well-connected person within the party who could advocate for his appointment and push his agenda.

“Because I realised that after we had finished everything, I had nobody to push my agenda if I said I wanted a particular position. So, unless it touches somebody’s heart and the person says, ‘Kwame, let’s give him something.’”
