‘A police officer slapped me after collecting money for my release’ – Timothy Bentum recounts

Ghanaian actor turned-reverend minister, Timothy Bentum, has recounted an encounter with the police during his younger years, stating that an officer slapped him after taking money from someone to secure his release.

Speaking in an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime on September 23, 2026, the Grace Avenue Ministry founder recalled how he was arrested during a police raid while he was with some friends in what he described as the ghetto.

“I remember one time, we were in the ghetto with the boys and then, there was a scatter. The police just entered and I remember trying to scale a wall,” he recounted.

According to him, an officer grabbed his trousers while he was attempting to escape, brought him down and took him to a police vehicle.

“As I began to scale the wall, the policeman held my trousers. He brought me down and took me to their car,” he said.

Bentum said the officer then asked who would pay for his release, but he did not have money on him.

“I was ambushed in the car, then the officer asked who was paying? I didn’t have money, but I knew some guy who used to visit my sister back in the day, so we went to him,” he explained.

He disclosed that the man gave the officers some dollars, but despite receiving the money, the officer allegedly slapped him before leaving.

“He gave them some dollars and before the officer would leave, he gave me a heavy slap,” he stated.

The actor noted that the incident remained memorable because of the physical pain he experienced for years afterwards.

“For more than 10-12 years, every time it was cold, I felt the pain. That was one of the instances where I got caught,” he shared.

Reflecting on the incident, Bentum added that he still remembers the officer vividly and joked that he would retaliate if he encountered him today.

“If I see him today, I can even slap him back,” he added.
