Ghanaian singer Iona Reine has advised couples to think carefully before entering into legal marriages, arguing that the process of ending such unions can make divorce unnecessarily stressful.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM on September 29, 2026, Iona Reine said couples could instead opt for traditional marriages and spend several years together before deciding whether to formalise their union legally.

“I will just encourage that no one should do legal marriage, where you would go to court and sign. Do only traditional and stay for like five to 10 years. Even that one after 10 years, something can still happen and the person will change,” she said.

According to her, the legal aspect of marriage becomes problematic when couples decide to separate because they have to go through the courts and involve lawyers.

“The legal part is what brings the issues. You have to go to court, get a lawyer and it makes the divorce process very stressful. If it’s just traditional, you just have to return the alcohol if you don’t want the marriage anymore and you’re done,” she explained.

I will marry again, even if it takes 10 marriages to find the right man – Iona

Iona Reine, who has experienced failed marriages, questioned why two people who once loved each other cannot simply remain faithful and treat each other with consideration throughout their relationship.

“In this life, we humans are the problem. I sometimes ask myself why can’t two people decide to be together for a very long time. Why must you hurt me to a point where I will decide not to be with you anymore? Why can’t you be faithful? Why can’t I also be faithful to you, or consider the love we have for each other and treat each other well?” she asked.

The singer also shared her concerns about marriages involving pastors, claiming that some pastors may not live up to the spiritual image they portray before marriage.

She said some women may marry pastors believing they are getting a spiritual partner who will lead their families in faith, only to discover aspects of their lives that contradict that expectation.

“Most Ghanaian pastors, the kind of things they’re involved in, you marry them and realise that they’re not even spiritual and they’re involved in a lot of shady things,” she alleged.

Iona Reine added, “Meanwhile, when you met him, everything about him showed that he’s spiritual and you will think you’ve gotten a spiritual head who’s going to lead you to Christ, but he’s the opposite and that’s what makes marriage with pastors difficult.”
