Rex Omar says musicians should not expect royalties without assigning their music rights
Head Coordinator of the Black Star Experience and executive of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), Rex Omar, has claimed that he has never heard of musician Mr Drew.
His comments come after Mr Drew said in an interview with GHOne TV that he had not received any royalties from his music.
Reacting to the musician’s comments in an interview on Okay FM on October 14, 2026, Rex Omar was asked whether he knows Mr Drew, following the musician’s concerns about not receiving royalties from his songs.
In response, Rex Omar said he had never heard the musician’s name before. He then compared the situation to buying a car without registering for insurance and later expecting to receive insurance benefits after an accident.
According to him, musicians must take the necessary steps to ensure their works are registered with GHAMRO before expecting to receive royalties from the organisation.
“I have never heard his name before. It is like buying a car without registering for insurance and then, when you are involved in an accident, complaining that you have not received any insurance benefits since you bought the car,” he said.

He further questioned whether Mr Drew was a registered member of GHAMRO and whether he had completed the necessary procedures to assign his music rights to the organisation.
Rex Omar explained that musicians must assign their music rights to GHAMRO to enable the organisation to protect their works and manage the collection and payment of royalties.
He argued that if a musician had not taken these steps, they should not expect the organisation to pay royalties for their music.
“Is he a member of GHAMRO? Has he gone to GHAMRO to fill out a form and sign over his music rights? You have to assign your music rights to GHAMRO to enable the organisation to protect your songs.
“So, if you have not assigned your rights to GHAMRO, how do you expect the organisation to pay you royalties? If you are a musician and you do not do the right thing, do not expect anything from GHAMRO,” he stated.
