Nigerian gospel singer and worship leader Victoria Orenze has criticised worshippers who prioritise recording videos on their phones instead of focusing on God during worship sessions.

In a video circulating online, the singer was seen addressing members of a congregation who were attempting to record her during a ministration.

She expressed displeasure at their actions and urged them to put their phones away and pay attention to the spiritual experience.

According to Orenze, many worshippers have become so attached to their phones that they focus more on capturing moments than experiencing God’s presence.

“Don’t use your phone. I will send you far away from here. You don’t know how to honour God. You don’t know how to respect the Spirit of God. Everything is about capturing, and yet you will have nothing inside. You want to capture? Capture in your heart,” she said.

She urged the congregation to put their phones aside and seek a personal encounter with God instead of concentrating on recording videos and taking pictures.

“Drop those phones. Have an encounter with God. This generation, we are used to phones. Anything, phones,” she added.

The gospel singer further questioned why some Christians feel the need to record videos even during moments of worship, arguing that their attention should be on God rather than their phones.

To explain her point, she compared worship to an intimate bedroom moment, asking the congregation whether they would carry their phones while making love in their rooms.

“When you are making love in your room, do you carry phones? You are before the Lord,” she said.

Orenze also reminded the worshippers that attending a church service should be more than simply being physically present or having videos to prove they were there.

She challenged them to consider whether their participation in worship had brought any meaningful change to their lives.

Orenze also cautioned Christians against treating church gatherings as entertainment events, insisting that worship requires reverence and respect for God.

“This is not a party. This is not a show. If you go to the club, if you do, that’s your business. Go and do what you want to do there,” she said.

She questioned why some worshippers struggle to show the same level of respect they would show when meeting important people in society.

She further urged Christians to recognise the importance of their time in God’s presence and avoid allowing distractions to interrupt what she described as important spiritual moments.
