US-based Ghanaian DJ, Switch, has stated that although juggling school and a career has become more challenging as she gets older, she has managed to make it work for almost a decade.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Patience Adu, she reflected on entering the Ghanaian showbiz industry dominated by adults at a young age, describing the experience as exciting rather than intimidating.
According to her, one of the biggest highlights of her journey was being mentored by renowned DJ Black after her breakthrough on Talented Kidz.
“I got the honour and the chance to be mentored by DJ Black while I was on Talented Kidz. I got the chance to go into his studio and he showed me all these cool turntables and how they work. It’s just so cool to have all these grown people to look up to and receive mentorship from,” she said.
Touching on balancing education with her demanding career, DJ Switch admitted that life has become more difficult now that she is in university, where deadlines and projects require more attention.
“It’s definitely hard. I won’t say it’s easy. It’s pretty hard, but we’re making it work. We’ve done it for eight or nine years and we’re still making it work,” she stated.
The entertainer also surprised many by revealing that she is studying Biology in university because she hopes to become a gynecologist one day, explaining that her passion for human anatomy influenced her decision.
She, however, noted that entertainment continues to find its way into her academic life, revealing that one of her university courses involves radio broadcasting, where she hosts shows and interviews people.
Beyond her own career, DJ Switch said she is passionate about creating opportunities for other young people.
She disclosed that through the DJ Switch Foundation and with support from her hometown’s Member of Parliament, a studio has been established to help nurture young talents who may not have access to such opportunities.
“I’ve always wanted to advocate for young people, whether boys or girls. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she added.
