Veteran Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has recounted how the late KK Kabobo’s music career suffered a major setback after fans failed to attend a stadium concert the artiste organised at the peak of his fame.

Speaking in an interview with DJ Slim, the rapper said staging a successful stadium concert is one of the biggest achievements any artiste can attain, stressing that musicians who pull it off deserve to be celebrated.

Reflecting on the evolution of Ghana’s music industry, Okyeame Kwame recalled that during the early days of hiplife, stadium events featured several artistes rather than a single headline act.

“When hiplife came, we used to play something called Loud in Kumasi and Kicking in Accra. It was in a stadium but it was never one artiste. Maybe an array of 12 artistes - Akyeame, Reggie, Buk Bak, all the hiplife artistes. The stadium used to be full, but it wasn’t just one artiste who had to perform alone if nobody came,” he said.

He contrasted that era with today’s music industry, where individual artistes are able to fill stadiums on their own, citing the feat as one worthy of admiration.

Okyeame Kwame then recounted KK Kabobo’s unfortunate experience, explaining that despite the artiste’s popularity at the time, his decision to organise a stadium concert ended in disappointment after fans failed to turn up.

“An artiste blew big in our time, KK Kabobo, and he took the Accra Sports Stadium to stage a show because he had become a huge hit, but no one showed up. That is how KK Kabobo’s career ended, and he was never able to pick it up. Stadium shows are not easy. Any artiste who is able to perform in a stadium needs to be saluted,” he stated.

His comments came after DJ Slim praised the growth of fan culture in Ghana’s entertainment industry, noting that loyal fan bases have made it possible for artistes such as Sarkodie to successfully stage stadium concerts despite the challenges involved.
