Not every musician will concur to what Ghanaian high life legend Randy Nunoo who has been hushed in the music industry for years not releasing any song told Flex newspaper this week.
In an exclusive interview with Flex newspaper, he said Ghanaian genre of music high life is suffering and it is because the high life musicians are not united. Explaining why most of the legends are not releasing songs anymore, he said things are not going on well in the industry and since we have problems they can’t be releasing songs.
“There is a business aspect of what we are doing. There are so many things we have been complaining about but those things keep repeating themselves and it is not making musicians get the fruit of their labor,” he said. He added he wants to release a song in the middle of this year but due to the national election, he wants to hold on and release after the election.
When asked his regrets as a musician, he said there are so many things he didn’t put in place. He thought favourable conditions would be there forever but realized later that everything had changed.
“When Obrafour, Tic Tac and the others came into the system, we didn’t care because we thought they wouldn’t make impact with their rap but all of a sudden they kicked high life from the system and since then, high life is still suffering. High life is not suffering because we can’t come out or we are not productive anymore but it’s suffering because the young ones have been accepted by the society. All the media hype and attention given to the current artiste wasn’t like that in our time,” Randy added.
He said high life musicians must blame themselves for the lull in the genre because they are not united like the young ones. “Until musicians become united we will not get anywhere. Every high life musician has his own agenda but the young guys are not like that. Have you heard Kojo Antwi collaborating with Amakye Dede, AB Crentsil collaborating with Randy Nunoo or George Jaarah collaborating with Rex Omar? It is not happening. We need to be business minded,” Randy Nunoo noted.
Randy stated that everything he has acquired now was through music and would die as a musician because he loves his job.
