The Chief Executive Officer of Open Door Counseling, Counselor Afia has condemned the use of the cane on children as a form of discipline. She described this act as torture in disguise.
She explained that the cane is the reason most children do not excel in school.
According to the counselor who spoke exclusively to GhanaWeb, it is better to counsel a child who has difficulty in understanding a subject than caning them; she added the cane does a lot more harm than good.
She attributed the excessive caning of children in school to the frustration of teachers and the number of schools that have sprung up over the years.
Counselor Afia added that most teachers go through so many frustrations in their own lives that it becomes really difficult for them to control themselves thereby sometimes caning and hurting the children.
She said as much as some children need aggression in order to conform, caning should be taken out totally.
She advised professional counseling should be sort rather than the cane.
