The Miss Ghana and Mr Ghana ambassadors, Afua Asieduwaa Akrofie and Archibald Acquaye, have asked Ghanaians to be proud of Ghana’s kente, a national treasure that ought to be cherished by all.

The two personalities have endorsed the fabric which is one of the country’s oldest heritages.

Kente remains a colourful Ghanaian traditional fabric worn mostly on important occasions and celebrations.

According to Afua, “Kente is one of Ghana’s best cultural brands to the world and I’m always proud to be associated with it as a Ghanaian.”

The two pageant personalities were among several others who attended an exhibition of some of the country’s finest and oldest kente fabrics at the Peduase Valley Resort at Aburi in the Eastern Region on March 4.

Fabrics exhibited were by Amadu Baba, a Ghanaian artifact collector who has been gathering the materials for over four decades.

Most of the kente cloths exhibited were over 100 years old, some of which had been used by famous traditional leaders of the Volta and Ashanti Regions.

The event, dubbed ‘Weaved With Love & Pride’, was aimed at celebrating Ghana’s rich culture as part of Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebration.

The Managing Director of Peduase Valley Resort, Hussein Fakhry, said Ghana must identify key elements of its culture, including the kente and capitalise on them to promote the Ghana brand.

“Today, branding Ghana should be the mission and vision of every one of us, of every entrepreneur, businessman, parent, teacher, doctor, artiste and farmer. This branding can only happen by identifying our strength, then building on through it,” he said.

Other dignitaries at the ceremony were Prof Audrey Gadzekpo; Dean of the School of Information and Communications Studies at the University of Ghana, and CEO of Exclusive Events, organisers of Miss Ghana pageant, Inna Patty.
