Grace Omaboe said local movies are still of great value in society
Veteran Ghanaian actress, Grace Omaboe affectionately called Maame Dokono has urged Ghanaians to patronize local movies to boost the Ghanaian culture in various homes.
She observed that the switch to foreign movies especially telenovelas has imbibed in Ghanaians communities foreign cultures which are brewing indiscipline in society underscoring the need for the reintroduction of local movies and drama series to correct societal ills.
According to her, watching local movies serve as a from education citing TV series ‘Obra’ (Akan drama) among others as those which can help rebuild the eroded morals in society.
In the early 90’s and 2000’s, ‘Obra’ a well known as Akan drama was the most educative and entertaining watched TV series.
The TV series were shown at the time many people did not have TV sets in their homes enjoyed massive viewership than most of the movies produced today.
At the time, both children and adults visited their neighbors’ homes to watch. One interesting rule of the ‘game’ was that a child who does not take his/her bath on that evening will be barred from watching it.
Akan drama appeared to have superseded all sort of movies and TV shows produced in the country because of its rich content.
However, this golden visual went off TV screen with the advent of telenovelas which has been frowned on by those in the industry who say it is gradually pushing them out of business.
But Speaking on Abusua Fm in Kumasi on Saturday, the renowned actress, said local movies are still of great value in society hinting of the reintroduction of a new series.
“Though most of my members have passed away, the rest are back on the screen to continue what we started earlier. Therefore, I recommend that every Ghanaian both at home and abroad to watch our new Obra series”.
