Pop musician Deborah Owusu-Bonsu known in showbiz as Sister Derby has called on Ghanaians to in their own small way help contribute to protecting the environment by reducing plastic pollution.

The ‘Uncle Obama’ hit maker made the call in an interview on the Class Drive on Class 91.3FM on Tuesday, 7 January 2020.

The singer told show host Prince Benjamin that: “I feel like we’re at the stage in Ghana where we’re trying to create more awareness to let people know that even though we said use plastic because it’s hygienic, it’s more for hygiene and convenience, we’re also telling you that right now it’s getting out of hand, there’s a global menace and we’ve to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use.

“For instance, me personally, it’s more like a lifestyle, so, if I go to buy something, I make the effort of taking my own bag, if I’m going to buy fruits or even if I’m going to buy waakye, I take my own bowl so it’s a plastic bowl but you’re reusing it over and over again. We take our own plastic bowl and we take our own paper bag.”

Sister Derby continued that: “If we go to the Kenkey house too if we’re not sitting there to eat [and] we take our own bowls, they get annoyed [although] it makes their work easier, they just get annoyed they don’t understand that you have a kenkey business, you’re selling fish, you’re selling shrimps, we’re educating you or helping you reduce plastic that’s going to actually help your fish business because fishermen are complaining, they’re suffering because when they cast their net and when it comes back, it’s full of plastics and rubbers. So, the truth is that in the whole world it’s difficult to recycle so at least right now in Ghana we’re starting with the awareness, creating awareness and then we’re also trying to recycle more and more.”

She called on Ghanaians to contribute to protecting the environment by separating their plastic wastes at home.

“In your own small way try and take your own bag when you’re going to buy something, try and take your own bowl and also try and separate your plastics at home. If you have the new Voltic bottle which allows you to twist and crush it, do that so it helps you pack more at the same time.”

Sister Derby revealed she currently finished recording a new song and urged her fans to watch out for it.
