Government Has Abandoned The People Of Agona West

Tue, 24 Aug 2010 Source: Quainoo, Kojo

22ND AUGUST, 2010

The Rank and File of the Agona Youth Confederacy would like to bring to the fore

certain issues confronting the indigenous people in the Agona West Municipality.

The township has not seen anything which confirms or attests to the fact that it

is a Municipality, even though the Government generates more revenue from the

Municipality than any other district or municipality in the Central Region. This

we believe should reflect in the socioeconomic development of the people.

Now the Municipal Assembly is finding it difficult to raise money to fix certain

basic problems in the municipality – dilapidated and deplorable infrastructure.

And this raises a lot of questions in respect of the management of the revenues

generated by the Assembly. We know as a matter of fact, that the moneys

generated are supposed to be used to develop the township, but that is not the

case we are facing here in the Agona Municipality.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our research and consultations with some key people in the

Municipality revealed the following:

There is not a single 10 meters road in the Agona West Municipality without

potholes; information reaching us indicates that the Ghana Highways Authority is

the body responsible for these patching but are reluctant to do so for reasons

best known to them. We agree that the Government cannot do everything at a goal,

but the conditions in the Agona West Municipality are worst, considering its

status as a Municipality, and being the number one revenue generating district

or municipality in the Central Region.

The Municipal Assembly is unable to raise money to repair broken down Septic

Empties, but had to rent the one from Effutu Municipal Assembly and other

District Assemblies. And this has resulted into a coherent closure of Public

toilets, thereby making people defecate at unwarranted places which could

possibly make cholera outbreak imminent.

Ladies and gentlemen, AYC needs relevant and tangible responses from the

Municipal Assembly and the Government respectively, in respect of the following

questions:

1. Why has the Ghana Highways Authority (Ministry of Roads and Highways)

abandoned the deplorable and death trap potholed roads in the Agona West

Municipality?

2. Is the Agona West Municipal Assembly broke?

We of the Agona Youth Confederacy (AYC) demand relevant and responsible

responses from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and the Agona West Municipal

Assembly respectively.

God Bless Ghana
