Ghana's mega-election has ended with a result few expected. The landslide victory for former President John Dramani Mahama and his running mate, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, on December 7, highlights the strategic efforts employed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during this election.
The results are a personal victory for the campaign group Jane Army of Women (JAW).
Since its unveiling in the summer of 2024, JAW hit the ground running, visiting markets, communities, hamlets, and festivals across the country to organize and mobilize support for the NDC's vice-presidential candidate ahead of the December 7 general election. Their ‘She-Vice President’ project reached every nook and cranny of people's lives.
As part of their campaign, JAW brought their activities and message to various events, including the Fetu Afahye Orange Friday Street Carnival in Cape Coast. They were also seen at several festivals, such as those in Agortime and Ziope in the Volta Region, as well as the Homowo Twin Festival and the Womba Street Carnival in Accra.
JAW took the ‘She-Vice President’ project to community markets like Madina Market, Makola Market, Dome Market, Oguaa Market, and other key locations. Additionally, they were highly active on social media, becoming a major grassroots movement that built an extensive network of volunteers and helped shatter the glass ceiling for women in governance.
JAW comprises women from diverse professional backgrounds and political affiliations who share a belief in the power of women. For them, lifting a woman is equivalent to lifting a nation.
Their ambitious slogan, ‘Lift a Woman, Lift a Nation,’ yielded impressive results, evident in the massive turnout of women voters for the John/Jane ticket in the just-ended general election.
The group successfully mobilized women from all professional and political backgrounds across Ghana in support of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang's vice-presidential campaign, proving themselves to be the real MVPs of the 2024 election.
