One cannot sensibly talk about nuclear energy without first performing a thorough, dispassionate cost-benefit analysis.
The researchers and the energy policy makers at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission failed to do this, for whatever their reasons are.
It is asinine to talk about nuclear energy as a better alternative in our quest for a more sustainable energy without first considering all the feasible alternative: from clean coal to all the renewable sources of energy.
All this is happening at a time when Germany, Europe's industrial powerhouse has even scaled back on nuclear energy and has turned to getting the bulk of its electricity from wind and solar.
If the new Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi can talk about providing electricity to 400 million Indians who currently do not have it, by using principally photovoltaic energy, then we need to explore that option, to explore electricity to our 25 million citizens.
I find it just amazing that we tend to forget that enough raw energy reaches the Earth from the sun in one hour to equal all of the energy used by the entire world in our 365 or so days.
I will simply ask Prof. Akaho and Dr. Sogbadji and Dr. Dzobo to seriously consider all the energy alternatives before making a pitch for nuclear energy.
This is how I would have reacted to the article.
