The late father of Mahamoud Bawumia was never a staunched supporter of Kwame Nkrumah but his political Nmesiss; he was a significant figure in the formation of the Northern Peoples Party and closely affiliated with the Nayiri. He fought to maintain and defend the interest of chieftaincy and Mamprussi domination of the non-chiefly people such as the Kusasi and Frafra. Only in 1958 did he cross carpet to support Nkrumah to stave of Nkrumah decapitation of Mamprugo hegemony. He was rewarded with a Nothern regional Commissioner position but even then, he never supported Nkrumah please.

Harlley, the main architect of the February, 24. 1966 coup who tipped him off to go to the North when Nkrumah nearly got him arrested in Accra. The matemehos could never have succeeded in usurping KN's authority without the help of treacherous and treasonable people like Mummuni Bawumia. Bawumia, his son, must be careful dealing with the progeny of his father's co conspirators. Anyway, live with treachery and die with treachery! Likewise, "like father, like son."
