  1990s: 300,000–350,000 people fled from southern Togo to Ghana and Benin due to economic decline, political repression, and ethnic tensions. Most returned home in 1997 when stability was restored.
  2005: 40,000 people fled from Togo to Ghana and Benin after violence broke out over the disputed election of Faure Gnassingbe. About half returned home in 2006, but many remained fearful for their safety.
  December 2022: Togo was home to almost 8,400 refugees from Ghana.
