  There are various reasons.
  Because teachers do not rest and are overburdened most dont teach adequately. Parents who can afford to pay teachers for extra tuition of their wards in school. Teachers saw this as a cash making venture so will definitely continue with the lackadaisical attitude to get more private students.
  
  Most students are also involved in tiktok videos. They spend more time learning new dance moves than studying. A girl of 11 years can sing the complete lyrics of a rap song but cant outline 5 factors of a topic.
  
  Every child owns a phone.

  The first batch of students who were introduced to the new national curriculum are currently in SS3. So how could WAEC introduce a test based on the new curriculum for students who received their instruction based on the old curriculum and expect students to pass and pass well?
  
  For a start, the new curriculum was designed to train students from KG to SHS. However, it was applied in block midstream - when the first batch of students were in JHS2 or so. For that matter, they missed all the foundation courses!
  
  Furthermore, no new textbooks were provided for the new curriculum. The same old editions of AKIOLA were the only text books available. In the few schools where teachers managed to lay their hands on first issues of new textbooks, students were still assigned homework exercises from the ancient textbooks.
  
  One would say that the few students who managed to pass the latest WAEC exams did exceptionally well under the circumstances! Our big men always talk their big English without making any proper sense.
  
  A couple of years ago, somebody decided to turn all the Polytechnics in the country into Technical Universities without doing proper feasibility studies and/or consultations, but received the highest applause. At the last check, students in these modern universities were still using textbooks whose latest editions were issued in the 1980s! Less than 3 out of 10 workshop equipment installed in the late 1960s were still in working condition - and even only just! Overnight, staff in these institutions started earning big titles and designations, and students could now be awarded degrees and higher diplomas, but little else has changed!
  
  As a country, our whole approach to education must be be revamped if we are to get anywhere. A week before the Core Maths paper in September, one of my nieces came home because she had three free days between the last paper and the next. I asked her about how ready she was for the Maths paper. She complained that she was struggling to understand Indices and Logarithms. So I stood her in front of a whiteboard I had purchased for home study. I realised that what she was rather struggling with was Basic Algebra, rather than Logarithms. She could not understand how 3x + y = 10 would be the same as y = 3x - 10. Lo and behold, she got a C6 as her result, and I have congratulated her on such achievement - at least she passed!

If they adopt same attitude next year but invigilation is tighten, similar or worse results would be produced. The previous ones were fraudulently procured through the instrumentality of the government.
