This is a classic case of "lying with statistics". You have quoted all manner of statistics and drawn all kinds of negative conclusions and then ended with a shopping list of unrealistic recommendations. Do you think the people making these calculations to move to the West are stupid? Because they are not forced to make the move, a reasonable assumption is that after weighing their options, they still consider their move to be better for them. There is also the little matter of the over $5 billion remitted to Ghana per year by these very migrants. Something you ignore the statistics for. Also, are you aware many nurses in Ghana are still unemployed 3-5 years after graduating? I believe that migration is an important issue but I also believe any one who wants to engage in its discussion must do his or her homework beyond pulling related and un-related statistics together. The writer should go back and do his homework.

I must be honest, I did not finish reading the entire article. It's a bit too long. However, there are two things that jumped at me.

First this thing going on for decades that all Ghanaians working abroad do is menial jobs. This has to be put to rest forever. I know hundreds of Ghanaian professionals abroad. Doctors, professors, nurses, immigration officers. In fact, I have a friend who is the Vice Chancellor of a prestigious university in Canada. And these people not only contribute money to the Ghanaian economy, they also contribute their expertise.

The second thing that the author said which is true and to some extent good, can also be the reason Ghanaians and for that matter, Ghana is not progressing: the Social and economic safety network available to Ghanaians at home. If you know that you can still eat, pay your rent, buy your clothes and pay your children's school fees without working, why worry? Why find innovative ways to make money? The Ghanaian working abroad knows that there is nobody who will help him/her should he/she loses his or her job, hence working two and three jobs. May be that economic network in Ghana must be stopped and see if Ghanaians in Ghana will not progress.

Thank you for your reply to the article. I very much appreciated your point. However, please note that majority are not the professionals you described. He was looking at the majority. I am a professional in the the pharmaceutical industry and I am well remunerated but I wholly understood his point. He wasn't looking at the meager 10% of Ghanaians in the diapora holding better jobs and well remunerated but the overwhelming majority who struggle from paycheck to paycheck for years unend.

Thank you for this insightful piece. Throughout human history, people have always moved from places of socioeconomic hardships to places with relative stabilities. Jews always on the go, Irish to America and elsewhere due to famine, Ukrainians to other parts of Western Europe due to the war, Syrians fleeing to other parts of the world due to wars and instability.
Ghana's situation is strange. For decades now, we've not had military take overs. What is driving Ghanaians abroad is bad governance. Corruption across board. It looks as if any opportunity given to any person becomes a stepping stone to corruption. The only people who are happy there are those with political power, kings, demon possessed prophets and pastors as well as businessmen and women with connections to political power in the administration in power.
Ghanaians who complain about corruption are the ones out of power or those who have never had any power.
I can safely opine that any Ghanaian in the diaspora who left Ghana at the age 20 yrs old and above had always desired to go back to live in Ghana. There are many factors that have always confronted this desire.
What the author described or explained in his piece are some of the factors keeping majority of Ghanaians in the diaspora to continue to stay due to the hard and unchanging situations in Ghana.
These are not bad statistics, stretching of facts or lazy conclusions as some have suggested.
We need visionary leadership. Leadership with compassion and unblemished integrity. Not just the leaders. All Ghanaians need to have some level of integrity, selflessness and care for Ghana. Ghanaians who live outside Ghana are mostly law abiding because the laws are generally enforced in those places especially Europe and America. This is not to say that it is 100%. But the same Ghanaians return home and become different- wholly corrupt.
Once again, thank you for your piece.
