  It's up to a nation's leaders to to take the high road when things aren't going well for citizens and those citizens begin to turn on foreigners as the cause of whatever economic challenges they may be facing. Good leaders will do everything possible to explain to their citizens that scapegoating immigrants is not the solution to their headaches. Unfortunately, far too many leaders choose to stay silent, believing that this scapegoating of immigrants takes some burden off their shoulders, though these leaders are usually the once who failed their citizens either through mismanagement, incompetence, or looting of national resources. Apartheid, unfortunately, has done so much damage to the psyche of many South Africans, and this can be seen in the abuse of alcohol by many, and the resulting lack of discipline among some to hold on to jobs. South Africa may be a wealthy nation, but it will take time to heal the scars of Apartheid, scars that are not merely present on bodies but rather scars that have caused damage on minds from years of neglect and abuse.
