All historical facts about this issue should now be properly documented and turned into a compulsory curriculum for every African child to study and read in all African schools.

Trouble is: The raiding and trading were actually done by our own chiefs. They were the real Purveyors of the vile and despicable. Sadly, we seem to have a selective amnesia about their role. History is what happened and recorded at the time not the embellished crap that our chiefs whose ancestors were ,more eager about the vile trade wants us to believe. Human sacrificing on an industrial scale to their useless river gods and selling slaves were their strongest selling point. They were vile and utterly despicablel. Prempeh was still at it even when it was abolished in the Gold Coast until he got his comeuppance in 1896. Yet, as an Asante kid, I was brainwashed to believe he was a victim. Well, he was horrid and repulsive human sacrifising tyrant.Have fun with this. History is not so pleasant nor one-sided. Me da wo ase paa!

Between 1700 and 1896, the Ashanti (Asante) Empire was a dominant military power in West Africa. Its Asantehenes (Kings) actively conducted territorial wars. Captives from these campaigns were traded to the Dutch and other Europeans for firearms, which fueled further conquests and the broader transatlantic slave trade.The Ashanti Kings who ruled during this era and their involvement in the slave and trade networks are as follows:

Osei Tutu I (1701–1717)Role: Founder of the unified Ashanti Empire.Activities: In 1701, his army decisively defeated the Denkyira at the Battle of Feyiase. This victory provided the Ashanti with a direct route to the coast, allowing them to initiate large-scale trade of captives and gold directly with European powers, primarily the Dutch.

Opoku Ware I (1720–1750)Role: Second Asantehene.Activities: Oversaw massive territorial expansion, pushing Ashanti control across much of modern-day Ghana. The perpetual warfare generated tens of thousands of war captives, who were exchanged with European merchants for guns and luxury goods

Kusi Oboadum (1750–1764)Role: Third Asantehene.Activities: His reign focused on consolidating the territorial and economic gains of his predecessors, which included maintaining the steady stream of captives and gold to the coastal forts.

Osei Kwadwo Okoawia (1764–1777)Role: Fourth Asantehene.Activities: Known for modernizing the military and administrative bureaucracy. His campaigns against neighboring tribes (such as the Dagombas) resulted in large numbers of prisoners of war who entered the slave networks connected to European traders.

Osei Kwame Panyin (1777–1798)Role: Fifth Asantehene.Activities: Continued to aggressively expand the empire's borders and engaged heavily in trade with both Northern African networks and European coastal posts.

Opoku Fofie (1798–1799)Role: Sixth Asantehene.Activities: His brief reign was heavily involved in quelling internal rebellions and defending borders, providing a steady supply of captives.

Osei Bonsu (1800–1823)Role: Seventh Asantehene.Activities: Under his rule, the Ashanti Empire reached the coast after taking over the Fanti territories in 1807. He supplied thousands of captives to Dutch and British slave ships. When the British abolished the slave trade in 1807, they attempted to curtail the Ashanti's coastal slave trading, leading to early conflicts.

Osei Yaw Akoto (1824–1834)Role: Eighth Asantehene.Activities: Actively fought the British in a series of conflicts (such as the 1824 war) driven by disputes over control of the coast, trade, and the right to conduct raiding and trading activities.

Kwaku Dua I (1834–1867)Role: Ninth Asantehene.Activities: His reign saw relative stability and the expansion of internal trade (such as kola nuts) to offset the decline of the transatlantic slave trade, although raiding for domestic enslaved labor and tribute continued.

Kofi Karikari (1867–1874)Role: Tenth Asantehene.Activities: Fought the British in the 1873–1874 Anglo-Ashanti War. The war culminated in the British invasion and sacking of the Ashanti capital of Kumasi in 1874.

Mensa Bonsu (1874–1883)Role: Eleventh Asantehene.Activities: Attempted to rebuild the empire's power after the catastrophic 1874 British defeat, relying on continued military campaigns and tribute collection.

Kwaku Dua II (1883–1884)Role: Twelfth Asantehene.Activities: Ruled for only a few months before dying of smallpox, leaving the empire in a state of civil war.

Prempeh I (1888–1896)Role: Thirteenth Asantehene.Activities: Tried to modernize the Ashanti state and consolidate its power. In 1896, British forces occupied Kumasi to definitively halt Ashanti raiding and expand British colonial power. Prempeh I was arrested and exiled to the Seychelles, bringing the independent Ashanti kingdom to an end before it was fully annexed in 1902.
