Joseph Bazalgette solved London’s sanitation crisis in the 1850s and 1860s by designing a vast, gravity-fed underground network. He built over 1,300 miles of interconnected brick sewers to intercept raw waste before it could enter the Thames, pumping and redirecting it to treatment facilities far downstream.His groundbreaking engineering strategy was built around several major components:Intercepting Sewers: Instead of dumping waste directly into the River Thames, Bazalgette designed 82 miles of large "intercepting" sewers running parallel to the river. These captured the waste before it reached central London.The Embankments: To house the low-level sewers, he constructed three major river embankments (the Victoria, Albert, and Chelsea Embankments). This narrowed the river, reclaimed land for public gardens, and created space for the London Underground.

Pumping Stations: Because central London is flat and lies close to sea level, he used gravity to carry the waste eastward. He then built magnificent, steam-powered pumping stations (like Abbey Mills and Crossness) to lift the sewage up 40 feet so it could continue its journey.Future-Proof Design: Bazalgette famously doubled the diameter of the sewer pipes beyond his own calculations. He insisted, "We're only going to do this once, and there's always the unforeseen," a foresight that allows the original Victorian network to still serve over eight million people today.

Storm Overflows: To prevent the flooding of streets and homes during heavy rain, he designed calculated overflows that released excess water into the Thames.Because Bazalgette's system successfully isolated waste from the city's drinking water, the cholera epidemics that had plagued London virtually vanished.

That suggestion was made around the late 60s, but the reception was met with insults and all sorts of demeaning words to point of other suggestion that he was coming up with an idea of redirecting the sea to Kumasi.

Now, who is paying for procrastination, and refusal to adhere to sound suggestion? We don't need a new city or capital because the money to build a new city or capital will be more than installing drainage system to channel all flooding waters into the sea.
