Nii Lantey, I read your article yesterday and today, it is a good article but what was missing was that the focus of the NPP to win the elections is to come to power and squander the "oil money". The NPP believed it was thier regime that Ghana discorvered oil and therefore they should come to power and loot the oil money wawawaaaaaaaaaaa. If you could remember in 2008, Nana campaign was on the oil discorvery but because Kufours regime was full of 'lutocracy' and non performance, Nana Addo changed strategy they went on kangaroo dancing spree. I was told when Bawumia was chosen to be the running mate, he asked about the strategy and issues to campaign on. All he was told was to learn the kangaroo dance. The PhD holder has to remove his neck tie and join the kangaroo dance "we are moving forward..."

You are wrong; Obama spent most of his time and money in the 9 swing states - Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. The Democrats did not waste their time and money on red states where minds cannot be changed or the blue states where they knew they had the votes.
NPP does not need to be a national party to win elections they just need to focus their attention on the swing regions of Ghana and they would be fine. With the difference in votes they simply need to win all the Akan regions and will be fine. They need to reclaim the Central, Brong Ahafo, and the Western region and will be fine. They can be an "Akan" party and still win elections if they can can get the whole Akan block and not let the NDC break the Akan front. Elections are about numbers (and the Akan numbers are enough to win any election) and not regions, at least in the case of Ghana.
I agree that the ground game is key, because retail politics wins elections; however, trying to be a national party is just a waste of time and money. Just as the Democrats would never be able to convince folks in Alabama or the Republicans folks in New York so would the NPP not be able to convince folks in the Volta region. Also remember that in Africa especially, incumbency rules, I think the NPP’s incumbency was squandered in 2008 by Kufour’s reluctance to campaign for NPP and only throwing his weight in when it was too late.

The NPP, because it is not a national party and also seen as a phony shell house of Asante/Akyem political aspirations, does not have a foothold in all parts of the country. This is surely not good news if the party wants to be seen as national and representative of the entire country. Having a ground game can be pivotal in winning elections. Obama had 3000 offices across the US as opposed to Romney's estimated 300-400 offices. If you are a national party, you must have a ground game to cover the whole nation. When Gov Dean of the Democratic Party in the USA talked about the 50 state strategy, most laughed at him. Today, we can report with a smile that this strategy is what saw Obama elected and surely reelected. Can the NPP boast of having a formidable ground game that engages the whole country? Surely not by winning only two regions out of ten. The NPP must develop a ten region strategy if it wants to convincingly win elections. Spread your wings NPP!! NPP's increased voter gain in the Volta Region is clear proof of what a solid ground game could do. Ground game in this context means real not phony engagement of each region and its districts."

Your point about Aliu and Kufour is so true and I also wondered during the NPP presidential primaries in Dec 2007 WHY THE SITTING VICE PRESIDENT WHO HAD SERVED FOR 8 YEARS WITH THE PRESIDENT WAS NOT AN AUTOMATIC SUCCESSOR. Now you have mentioned it, I tend to agree with you it was purely because for the NPP, Aliu's name and face 'did not fit' their brand of flag bearer. Around the time, I had advised candidate Arthur Kennedy against standing and warned him that the NPP set up and hierarchical system did not suit him. He stopped communicating with me and even blocked my email link to him! Surprise, surprise, he got ONLY ONE VOTE and I watched him being RIDICULED during the Primary process where he was laughed at and mocked and clearly not taken seriously.
The entrenched corruption in the election of candidates in the parties is staggering and there are serious lessons for all to learn from your writings. Thank you.

But don't you think the evidence in terms of the PERSONALITIES who dominate the party leadership rather tells a different story? It is true a number of,young dynamic members are coming through but you know full well that it is not easy to rise to,prominence within the party if you lack the necessary 'connections'? By the way do,you also not realise that family lineage is very much a strong suit of the party leadership? I just happen to think that the writer has identified some genuine issues which the party (if it wants to be a one nation party and to broaden its appeal to people like myself) should take seriously.
I also think that his point about Aliu not being the natural successor to Kufour after serving two terms as GHANA's VICE PRESIDENT was UNFORTUNATE and in my humble opinion, there can be no other explanation for that 'SNOBBERY' EXCEPT that he did not fit what the party 'faithful' expected of their leader. Surely the NPP leadership at the time, led by the president could and SHOULD have made the case strongly for him to succeed KUFOUR and I am convinced the NPP would not only have won that election, they might even have grown their national appeal, their base and their electoral fortunes.
My advice to you is that instead of challenging and criticising good advice and truthful analysis by others, you should as a party look within, take these comments and views on board and REBRAND for greater NATIONAL APPEAL. after all a word to the wise they say "IS IN THE NORTH" (modification mine, to create a it of humour).

By the way Kwabena, does it make sense for 17 people to contest a party leadership or flag 'bearership' in an incumbent or ruling party where the president has exhausted his two terms and the VICE president has submitted his candidacy? If the party wishes to campaign on its track record which one would presume the VP can equally claim credit for, then why on earth do you, need 17'candiates to decide who represents the party? Does that alone not tells you that something was fundamentally wrong within the party?
It may seem to you thatnitmis an open system and a mark of true democracy where everyone has a chance to stake their claim, but as you saw for yourself in the proces where at least one third of candidates DID NOT EVEN GET VOTES IN DOUBLE DIGIT FIGURES, that was a completely flawed process and did not prove that the party had indeed changed ( except from the outside and we all know appearances can be deceptive) but made people, like myself to question the seriousness of the party. Just think about it.

It is clear that this guy does not know a thing about NPP. NPP changed the delegates system in 2010. About 115000 party members went to the primaries to elect the presidential candidate and Nana Addo won. It is rather the NDC that has stuck to the delegate system which that gave Nana Konadu only 3% of the vote from about 3000 delegates. So the question of bribery in the election of NPP's presidential candidate does not arise. We all know what went on at Sunyani during the NDC's congress that elected Mills.

Mike, how could NPP seek an injunction on the inauguration of John Mahama and by what means (legal and constitutional)? The Constitution makes provision for the President Elect to be sworn into office even if there is a challenge against his/her election at the Supreme and for the President once sworn into office to act as President in accordance with the Constitution until the Supreme Court decides otherwise. So how could have NPP obtained an injunction to stop the inauguration and at what court?
It is very unfortunate for you to suggest that if the Supreme Court is persuaded that NPP has presented credible evidence that have been interrogated by all parties and consequently the SC rules in favour of NPP, President Mahama will refuse to abide by the Supreme Court ruling because he controls the state machinery for oppression (the police and the military). If that is the case, then John Mahama is not fit to be President because the supreme law of the country is the Constitution and it says that the decision of the Supreme Court on such matters must be accepted. That is really scary to read from you. Is that what you expect will happen?
I am of the view that NPP's petition will not be successful based on information put in the public domain so far by the party. However, if some of the alleged irregularities are proven at the Supreme Court beyond any reasonable doubt then President Mahama and NDC should respect the decision of the Supreme Court. I hope writers use this forum to encourage the public to respect the rule of law in order to strengthen Ghana's democracy.

AGREED, indeed we must aim to educate readers and he general public to understand better how our democracy yorks, and for ALL to respect the rule of law. To be fair to Mike though, I think he was merely erring his opinion on a possibility since the SC interpretes the law and it is for OTHERS to comply or abide by them and humans being what they are, you can never really tell how they will react.
