Who doesn't know the real motives of the MTTU guys and gals of the road. The real "bad guy" on our roads are drivers who do not "DO SOMETHING". On my way to Atta Mills' funeral in August, one of them stopped me at Akuse junction to tell me how red their eyes were. When I reminded him I was getting late so he should get to the business for which he stopped me, he decided to detain me for 27 minutes on the highway. I went through what I had never been through in any airport in the world. Because my car was empty and he had nothing to search, he even decide to go though my wallet, me letter box, my pocket and inside my shoes. These are professional MTTU men.

I live in an area where congestion is actually caused by Police 'cos they have to stop everybody so many times a day. Do they have the resources for that.

Certainly, the police are doing a great job. Wait till you are stuck in a mayhem at a traffic intersection to appreciate the effort of the police. When a police officer appears on the scene, in a about 10 minutes order returns!
It is clear to all that the problem with the police has very little to do with the logistics or numbers of the personnel. The bane is corruption, incompetence, indiscipline and poor supervision. All these have combined to make the MTTU ineffective and therefore deserve little respect.
The MTTU appear to turn their task into a moneymaking venture. They therefore fish out for the least opportunity to extort monies from drivers. For example, if the direction of a road has been changed, drivers used to that road may not notice it even if there is a sign to that effect. In all countries what the police do is get men there to direct errant drivers. But what do our MTTU do? They get their men to hide and wait for any driver who mistakenly turns into it. They will jump into the car and command you drive to MTTU HQ. However, on the way they negotiate a fee and leave the driver. You may argue that the driver broke the traffic law, but you will agree that most of driving is intuitive. When you have been turning into a particular place, you are not likely to looking out for when there is a restriction. That is why the police are to direct you, not arrest.
The desire to extort is so strong that even minor infraction which the police should normally advise or warn the driver, our MTTU personnel are prepared to abandon their job and jump into the car and command you to drive to the office! So what happens to the traffic in his absence?
Most of the MTTU personnel appear not to be well grounded in the road traffic rules. As a result they police PAPERS and not the traffic. Apart from the obvious cases of jumping the red light, the police pay scant attention to wrong driving. They therefore concentrate on road blocks to check papers. But what happens to a reckless driver who arrives at a check point and all his papers are correct, is he not free to continue driving dangerously? It is only in Africa that the police use road blocks as a method of policing traffic! And is there any wonder that the worst road carnage occurs in Africa?
Dear ACP Awuni, have you realised that our bus stops have been turned into taxi ranks and that this is one of the sources of nuisance on our roads? How come that the misbehaviour at that the 37 Bus Stop has not come to the attention of the police, just a stone’s throw away from the DVLA? Why should the police ignore the nuisance at bus stops but harass drivers who commit minor traffic offenses? – not that I mean you should condone wrong doing.
It is even more curious when you are going on an intercity journey. It looks like the main duty of every police station along the highway is MTTU work. You will see from the Station Commander down to the Counter clerk mount a road block checking papers. Yet there is so much mayhem on the highways. This proves that mounting roadblocks to check papers is a futile effort. In fact it is mainly
done for corrupt purposes and not to police traffic!! And how come that despite all the checkpoints that vehicles with very defective tyres or lights are allowed through checkpoint after checkpoint?
And I wonder why the MTTU personnel are so rude to drivers? When they stop you they try to humiliate you. Any explanation is considered a challenge to their authority. They will blurt out: Are you teaching me my work? It is also shocking how some MTTU personnel can twist evidence against anyone who refuses to bribe them!!!
Can the MTTU explain to Ghanaians why they check only commercial drivers’ papers at checkpoints?
And now to this issue of OKADA which the MTTU Commander has taken as his personal battle! Even though the law may prohibit it, I am convinced this is a case where the law has got it 100% wrong. The law does not reflect the Ghanaian socio-economic reality: There is hardly any public transport!!! I know ACP Awuni’s village and can tell all Ghanaians that the main means of transport is the okada. So if the okada operators in Accra are flouting traffic rules, why should that lead to someone in Awuni’s village being denied transport? And just like Awuni’s village, many parts of Ghana depend on the okada for transport and this is the reality of Ghana.
If the okada operators are not obeying traffic rules, is it not the MTTU who are charged with enforcing the laws? If ACP Awuni and his men have failed in their duties, clamping down on okada operators is just misdirected effort. I am sure ACP Awuni’s immediate reaction will be: THE LAW PROHIBITS IT!
In conclusion, I must assure the MTTU that all Ghanaians appreciate their role and effort. However, I hope ACP Awuni will consider the following suggestions:
1) Instead of mounting checkpoints, the MTTU should be mobile in order to monitor the drivers’ driving. They should pull over only those committing traffic offenses to inspect their papers. The IGP got it spot-on a few months on this point, but is sad that the MTTU boss did not give him the necessary backing and failed to operationalise the idea. The MTTU personnel actually sabotaged the IGP correct approach to traffic policing.
2) The police should stamp out the emerging practice of turning bus stops into taxi ranks;
3) I suggest that the MTTU recommends to the government to amend the law because the reality is that okada is extremely necessary in present day Ghana – even in Accra. It is serving a very useful purpose and filling a huge void. We have no public transport and so okada has a place.
4) Efforts should be made to stamp out corruption in the MTTU.

Those who control traffic at the interchange and at the roundabout are doing the right thing. What about those who stand on the high ways and collect money from drivers?Come to Fawoade in the Ashanti Region to be precise Kumasi - Mampong road, whiles some Police are controlling traffic in some cities to ease conjesttions, these Police from Mamponteng and sometime they will come fom Tafo or from the Kumasi Regional headquaters to cause traffic jam on this road. This traffic jam sometimes will continue up to Ahwiaa when coming from Kumasi and up to Mamponteng when coming from Mampong. What is the Police MTTU- Accra doing to stop these Police from disturbing the road users in this area? The Police from region have their time to come, those from Tafo have their time as well as Mamponteng also have their time all in the same day.IGP must do something about this because it is spoiling the police dignity,
