  The water situation in Takoradi coming up to Christmas was bad. The GWCL needs the support of the regional admin and gov't to address the problem of river pollution immediately.

While we busy ourselves with useless things the foreigners are taking our fish, gold, oil, timber, etc and leave us with polluted sea, rivers, air and desert.

  Do you think if we have a strong man leading Ghana right now as we used to, these nation wreckers will dare do the damage that they are doing right now? And to read that the people affected decided to hold off from confronting the galamsey boys because they are from the localities makes one want to throw up. If your neighbour is killing you, you will stand aloof because he is your neighbour?
  
  The elections are over and it time for the clueless government officials to spring into action before more damage is done.

  It is us, period. The whole nation, including the ruling elite, lacks environmental awareness.
  
  It wouldn't be an exaggeration to describe us a nation of ecoilliterates:
  We don't know much about basic ecological concepts; we don't understand and appreciate the interrelationships between the biotic elements, on the one hand, and between the biotic and abiotic elements on the other hand.
  We have problem managing the waste we generate. We daily defile our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems - forests, grassland, coastline, mountain ranges, rivers, streams, lagoons, lakes, and wetlands unmindful of the flora and the fauna that depend on them.
  
  How many of us know about the importance of biodiversity, the detrimental effects of air and noise pollution? Or the causes and effects of climate change?
  
  We've got to teach our young people ecology and environmental science, with sustainable education programmes becoming a common fixture on the campuses of our colleges and universities.

  Our traditional way of life wss meant to protect the environment. In fact it enabled our people to live in harmony with their envronment.
  
  Rivers were treated with respect. There were designated areas for drawing water, and other areas for bathing etc. There was no farming or fishing on certain days which allowed the forests and seas to to be preserved and people to rest.
  
  We must go back to our roots and learn from the way our ancestors lived.

  What does our newly appointed Minister know about how to protect our rivers,forests,lands etc.from poisionous materials.I wonder why foreigners are given permits to come and pollute our drinking waters and nothing is done to treat it after they have destroyed it with heavy metals. Who from Ghana or any African country would be granted permit to engage in such primitive mining in China as the Chinese are doing in our country? It is very disgraceful to see such a thing happening in our dear country.The last time I visted Nsawam,river Densu, which had being a source of drinking water in the sorrounding towns and villages is no more flowing as it used to be years ago.Our useless governments officials have shut their eyes looking elsewhere and the environment is getting worse and worse every day with the Chinese and foreigners making millions of money out of us.Yesterday,it was the Fulani cattlemen destroying our farms.Today,it is the turn of Chinese and foreiners polluting our drinking waters and environments.Sooner there will be an epidemic of serious diseases in Ghana that our hospitals will find it difficult to treat.

It is dishonest to blame the small fish when by far the biggest offenders are allowed to get away Scot free.

  NDC & NPP spent millions of dollars parading themselves/campaigning around the country, making vague promises to excite and confuse their followers, election campaigning is over and solutions to Ghana's problems are not even being discussed, these jokers/politicians, are tying up the judicial system accusing each other of being dishonest, and attempting to create parliamentary gridlock.
  
  Ghana/Africa is being mercilessly raped of it's natural resources (which includes: poisoning of potable water systems, destruction of farmland etc.) by foreign invaders posing as investors using the cover of "free market economy" to loot and plunder vulnerable nations with neocolonial governments.
  
  Ghana's Supreme Court judges should chase those one issue politicians out of the courts, and order all of them (NDC&NPP,) to prove that they are capable of leading, by clearly articulating their party's program for solving the country's problem, and moving forward with permanent solutions.
  
  Please, please, please NDC&NPP politicians, stop the bickering, threats, and insults, and get on with the business of nation building, you are supposed to be the best brains in the land, but so far, it is difficult to distinguish the difference between politicians and local area boys.

Email the president at contact@presidency.gov.gh, telling them how you feel about this and/or how this affects you. Pass this email address onto friends and family, and let us see if in the next month if they listen contact@presidency.gov.gh (or indeed if the email address even works- I wanted to email our national police service about this, and was interested to note that none of their email addresses work.)
  
  If we do not hear back, then we know that maybe the corruption in this matter goes to the heart of the political administration.

  The pollution of Pra river and its tributaries is not a recent problem,(see 1993 Aboadze Thermal Plant Fesibilty Study-Environmental Assesment) just that it has become worse in the past decade due to increased legal and illegal mining activities. The pollution problem extends to the estuaries as well, and all shellfish have been shown to have a high toxic contamination of chemicals.
  What is needed is a proper environmental assesment and a corresponding Evironmental tax on all the mining companies as well as a proper Environmental Protection Regulatory Body. SOON it will be a "case of water, water eveywhere and yet not a drop of water to drink"

  Simple and Short. Despite the fact that galamsey has been part of Ghana's history predating colonial times, it is important that the current government comes to it's senses and mandates the stoppage of all small scale mining activities, alluvial mining as well strip mining that has polluted our water systems, rivers, streams and destroyed the livilihood of famers who depend on cocoa farms and vegetable farms. We The People Are crying out for an immediate stoppage. The greedy chiefs and village elders ought to be made aware of the effects of their greed and selfishness.

  Pressure groups:
  Action that can be taken include direct action such as demonstrations close to parliament within the rules such as remits, and places out of bounds. Papers, pictures films and a whole cataloged evidence should be recorded for the sake of the Ghanaian museums,authorities such as the world courts. Money can be obtained to reverse the situation. The companies and countries responsible can be fined.
